Steven Isono, M.D.
Certified by the American Board of Orthopaedic Surgery, Dr. Isono specializes in Sports Medicine as well as surgery of the knee and shoulder. After graduating from Harvard University with Honors in Biochemistry, he attended the Northwestern University Medical School and further trained in microsurgery at the Tokyo Metropolitan and Kyoto University Hospitals in Japan. Dr. Isono completed his Internship and Residency in Orthopaedic Surgery at the Stanford University Medical Center after which he received his Board Certification in 1989 and was re-certified in 1999.
Dr. Isono is a member of the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the Arthroscopic Association of North American, the United States Olympic Sports Medicine Society, the American College of Sports Medicine, the California Orthopaedic Association, the International College of Surgeons, the American Medical Association, and the California Medical Association.
His numerous honors include being named as one of America's top surgeons by Consumer's Digest, San Francisco magazine, the Consumer's Research Council of America and the Center for the Study of Services.
Dr. Isono serves as a Team Physician for multiple U.S. Olympic Teams including USA Triathlon, Judo, Track and Field, Taekwando, Gymnastics and Boxing. He also is the Head Team Physician for the Laney College Football Team. Dr. Isono also serves as a Consultant for the Ironman World Triathlon Championships, Western States Endurance Run, the Special Olympics, and the Pro Tour of Action Sports.
Steve grew up locally and attended Oakland High School and is an associate of the One Nation Project, a non-profit organization in West Oakland working with inner-city kids for their social, academic, and athletic development. As a basketball enthusiast, he has coached AAU boys basketball teams to three national AAU tournaments and won the California State Games Championship in 2004. Steve also coached the Head Royce girls varsity basketball team for 10 years and currently coaches the boys varsity basketball team as well as a special Olympics basketball team.
